It's a tough world out there!

The rate of change has increased dramatically over the years, from snail mail to email to instant messages we have been moving at lightening speed in our expectations of the response from our infrastructure, employees, partners, vendors, service providers. Over capacity and commoditization are afflicting virtually all industries. Everything that was a premium service or product yesterday is expected to be free today. Look at the concessions the major US corporations have to retain their market share globally. Local and genteel competition has become global and intense. We now live in a connected, competitive and correlated world. When did you last expect to pay higher gas prices since someone on the other side of the world was also competing for the same product?

Yesterday's certainties and assumptions are no longer valid, sudden shifts in the business environment are routine now, higher and higher expectations from shareholders, partners, customers is the norm, information accessibility is creating more choices and creating tougher, more demanding and more powerful customers! In fact every one wants stuff that is perfect free and available now!

How do we respond!

It is not enough to come up with a new phrase to define our march to success. Some slogans from the past are restructuring, reengineering the enterprise, outsourcing, off-shoring, best shoring and so on! Each time we have declared victory, only to find that we have picked the low hanging fruit but the real riches have eluded us. The more we change the more things remain the same, in fact even when we know how to change, we may not know what to change. One thing is clear; more of the same is not enough!

A relentless and ongoing effort to improve performance is the only way out! Once we have defined the goal and developed the strategy maps, it is necessary to measure the success and continuously monitor the progress. Can we imagine driving from San Francisco to Los Angeles in a car without a dashboard, a roadmap or the signs and milestones on the freeway? Could we still maintain all the regulations and not get pulled over? Would we know in time, whether the coolant is over or the gas tank is about to become empty? Would we know what speed the car is going? And so on! What we need is a system to measure the progress and the direction! A corporate navigation system, a monitoring and response system, an awareness system that monitors short term and long term changes in the competitive environment and a system to measure our performance improvement.

But what is tough about performance improvement is summoning the courage and will to change, inventing new modes of operation and overcoming inertia and resistance to change, implementing new technology platforms etc. A willing driver is the most important factor in this endeavor, an intelligent navigator is a must, and a talented and fast pit crew is obvious.
